Muslims taking part in the pilgrimage to Mecca.

It is very unfortunate that most Americans do not fully understand why some Muslims dislike us as a culture. Why is it important to understand? Well, a powerful example is the events of September 11, 2001. Islamic extremists attacked us on our own soil on this tragic day. We tend to feel angry, we tend to want revenge, but do we tend to understand the strong feelings of distrust and hatred aimed at our culture? You may ask, what did we do wrong? What did Americans, and more importantly, our government do to cause one of the largest religious and culture groups in the world to make us their target?

Over the next few days, we will be studying the Muslim faith and culture. Our goal will be to uncover the true reasons why some Islamic extremists had plotted to kill Americans to revenge the wrongs done toward their religion.

Procedure

  • First, we will view a live report which was aired on CNN the morning of September 11th.
  • Next, we will learn a bit about the Islamic faith. While watching this clip, please write down the major points communicated. You should record at least ten (10) points. Do this on a Word Document and turn into the classroom web page drop box. You must sign up for the web page in order to leave an assignment in the drop box.
  • In order to learn more about why the United States has become a target of extremists of the culture, we will view a few minutes of a video titled Obsession
  • As a class, students will read an excerpt from "Advocating for the Devil: Hearing Al-Qaeda's Case Against the United States."
Students will categorize and explain each of the four reasons stated for Al-Qaeda's quest against the U.S.
  • Finally, students will identify aspects of American culture that are most offensive to the islamic faith. Students will create a photo collage to contrast images representing American and Islamic culture.
