It's time to learn about government systems!
Procedure:
Step 1.) Bellringer: What is YOUR definition of the term government? What is a government's role in a country? How should the citizens of the country interact with the government? Turn in your Bellringer into the drop box labeled "Bellringer: Define Government."
Step 2.) Study! Open and save onto your computer "Principles of Government Revised." This is a PowerPoint slide show and can be found on the classroom web page under Section Files. We will study this information as a class. You should also study on your own. There will be a quiz on this material. Be sure to take note of the vocabulary words outlined in yellow. Understand these words because they will be important during our discussions.
Step 3.) Activity: 4 Corners. Which of the four essential features of a government is the most important? Discuss with fellow classmates.
Step 4.) It's time to learn about governments around the world. Follow the directions below to complete this assignment. When finished, submit your PowerPoint into the drop box under "Assignments."
- On the classroom home page, scroll down to the bottom to find "Section Files"
- Open up two PowerPoint Presentations: "Major Types of Governments" and "Types of Governments.PowerPoint Slides.Assignment"
- Study the information on the PowerPoint titled "Major Types of Governments"
- Use the info from that Presentation to complete the tasks for the assignment. First, open up "Types of Governments.PowerPoint Slides.Assignment." Next, read the directions on the first slide. Finally, use the other PowerPoint and the internet to complete the work.
- When completely finished, save the work in your Government folder. Go to the classroom web page to submit your work in the drop box, under Assignments, labeled "People In Power: Who Does the Governing?"
Step 5.) Bead Game Simulation. An in class activity where students participate in production of beaded jewelry in order to understand how different types of economies operate. Students will create a chart to organize their experience.
Step 6.) Now, it is time to learn more about different economies found in countries throughout the world. Students will create a chart that compares capitalist, Communist, and socialist economic systems. The chart should contain the following information about each economy: (a) who owns the means of production, (b) who makes the economic decisions, (c) and whether or not there is competition and a profit motive (a "profit motive" can be described as the amount of motivation a worker has to make money, or a profit). To complete this assignment, open a Word Document and create a chart like the one completed for the Bead Game Simulation. If you do not know how to make a chart on Word, there is a template on the homepage of the classroom web page under "Section Files" titled "Template Chart Economies", or ask another student for help! Be sure that your chart includes the information outlined above!
Use the following resources to uncover the information you must organize in the chart.
- Pages 26 - 30 in the textbook
Step 7.) Today's assignment will have you learn more about the vocabulary necessary to understand when studying economic systems. Create a PowerPoint presentation in which you complete the following steps: a.) write the definition for vocab word, b.) find a picture or clip art from the web that represents the meaning behind the word. You may use the Internet to search for a definition of the vocab word. You may also use the textbook as a resource. The following words should be defined in your PowerPoint: capitalism, free market, laissez-faire, mixed market economy, socialism, communism, bourgeoisie, proletariat, command economy. If you do not know how to start a Power Point or copy and paste images into a slide show, please ask a fellow student.
